Feature

Equal, fixed, or weighted — split any expense the way it actually happened.

Real-world splits aren't always 50/50. Dolio supports equal shares, fixed amounts per person, and weighted shares for when contributions are uneven.

The problem

50/50 splits don't match how groups actually spend

One person ordered the wine. Two people skipped dessert. The kids had pizza while the adults had the tasting menu. Forcing every expense into an equal split means doing math in your head — or just eating the difference.

Most apps make this hard. Dolio makes it the default.

How it works

Three split modes, one tap to switch

  1. 1

    Equal

Pick the people involved. Dolio divides the total evenly. The fastest path when everyone is in.

  2. 2

    Fixed amounts

Type a specific dollar amount per person. Use this when one person picked up extras, or when the bill itemizes cleanly.

  3. 3

    Weighted shares

Assign each person a weight (1×, 2×, 3×). Dolio splits the total proportionally. Perfect for families where adults pay full and kids pay half.

Real example

A four-person dinner where the split isn't even

Carol orders pasta. Alice and Bob share a wine bottle. Everyone has appetizers. The bill is $100 — but a flat 25/25/25/25 split would stick Dan with $25 of wine he never touched.

In Dolio, you log three line items with three different splits in under a minute. Each person ends up paying for what they actually had.

Use cases

When flexible splitting matters

Someone didn't drink

Wine bottles split between two while everyone covers the food. The classic case for fixed or weighted shares.

Adults covering kids' shares

Family trips where parents pay full and kids count as half. One weighted split, settled in seconds.

Uneven travel commitments

Three friends fly business, two fly economy. Weighted shares let everyone pay their actual amount, not an average.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix split modes within the same group?

Yes. Each expense has its own split mode. One dinner can be weighted while the next is equal — Dolio recomputes balances across all of them.

What if the fixed amounts don't add up to the total?

Dolio shows the running total as you type. If there's a remainder, it's flagged so you can either assign it to someone or adjust until the math closes.

Can I exclude someone from a single expense?

Yes. Pick the participants per expense. Group members not selected are excluded from that one — they're still in the group for other expenses.

Is there a limit to how many shares a weight can represent?

Weights can be any positive number. Dolio handles fractional weights too (1.5× for someone splitting their share with someone outside the group).

Split it the way it actually happened.

No more rounding errors, no more 'close enough.' Dolio's math is exact.
