Currency conversion turns balances into arguments
You’re on a trip to Lisbon. One person logs an expense in dollars because that’s how their card statement shows it, another in euros because that’s what the menu said. Now everyone needs to know which exchange rate Dolio used, on which day, and whether the live rate has moved since.
Dolio sidesteps the whole mess: each group picks one currency at creation. Every expense, balance, and transfer is in that currency, period.

EUR, USD, GBP, JPY, and dozens more — pick the one that matches where you'll spend. The choice is locked in for that group.

Every expense is in that currency
Type amounts directly in the group's currency. If you paid in another, convert at the time of entry — Dolio stores the converted amount, not the original.

Balances and transfers stay in that currency
Who owes whom is always shown in the group's currency. No floating exchange rates, no historical-rate questions.
Real example
A weekend in Lisbon, all in EUR
Four friends fly to Lisbon for a long weekend. The group is created with EUR as the currency. The Airbnb (€840), pastel de natas (€18), tram tickets (€24), and a wine tour (€220) all go in as euros.
When it’s time to settle, every balance is in EUR. Dan owes Alice €60, Carol owes Alice €40 — clean numbers, no rate footnotes, no “but the dollar moved” arguments.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the group's currency later?
No. Currency is set at creation and locked in. This is intentional — converting historical balances introduces ambiguity (which rate? which date?) that Dolio refuses to surface.
What if I paid in a different currency?
Convert at the time of entry, using whatever rate fits (the rate your bank charged, today's mid-market rate, etc.) and enter the converted amount. Dolio is honest about not picking a rate for you.
Which currencies are supported?
Dolio supports the major world currencies including EUR, USD, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, CHF, SEK, NOK, DKK, PLN, CZK, HUF, plus most ISO 4217 codes.
Can I have separate groups in separate currencies?
Yes. Different groups can use different currencies — useful if you have ongoing splits with friends in EUR and roommates in USD.
