Splitwise's free plan stops you adding expenses after a certain number each day. That much is settled — Splitwise says so itself. What no Splitwise page will tell you is what the number is, when it resets, or which timezone the day belongs to. Here is everything Splitwise has actually put in writing, with dates.
What Splitwise publishes about the limit
There is exactly one official page about it: a help-centre article titled Why am I seeing an expense limit? Its whole explanation runs to four short paragraphs, and it opens with this:
Splitwise has introduced a daily expense limit for our free tier.

The rest explains the reasoning — paid subscriptions keep the service sustainable — and offers three ways out: subscribe to Pro, wait for the limit to reset, or, in Splitwise's own words, "ask a friend to add the expenses on your behalf". No number appears anywhere in it.
We checked whether one ever did. The Wayback Machine holds 14 content-distinct captures of that page between 6 December 2023 and 8 August 2026. We extracted the body text from each and compared them: all 14 are identical. In two years and eight months, Splitwise has not changed a word of its only public explanation — and has never named a figure, a reset time or a timezone in it.

The only numbers Splitwise has ever given
In October 2023, as the limit rolled out, several users emailed Splitwise support and posted the replies to a thread on r/ynab. The Wayback Machine first archived that thread on 25 October 2023. Two of the replies contain figures.
It looks like you hit a daily expense "rate-limit" (up to 3 per day). Splitwise includes rate-limits to prevent spam and bots from generating fake activity on our platform. […] To better support customers who are using Splitwise heavily, we've set a much, much higher limit (over one thousand per day) in our Pro tier. […] We are rolling out these limits slowly so some accounts may encounter limits before others.

Splitwise's free tier is limited to adding three new expenses per day for each user. We're sorry if this comes as a surprise. We feel the best way for us to communicate changes to our product with you is right from within the app, since most people don't appreciate or read unnecessary emails or blog posts.

Take these for what they are: emails posted by users, not statements Splitwise published. We can't verify Splitwise sent them. What makes them worth quoting is that two unconnected people posted replies with the same distinctive framing and the same figure, and that figure — three per day — has never been contradicted by Splitwise since.
Two lines in them explain more than the number does. "We are rolling out these limits slowly so some accounts may encounter limits before others" means there was never a single limit to report — accounts differed by design. And "the best way for us to communicate changes to our product with you is right from within the app" is Splitwise stating outright that it chose not to announce the change anywhere you could look it up. Both are still true today, which is why no page on the internet — this one included — can honestly hand you a current number.
When the limit arrived
Splitwise's own marketing dates it. In the 23 June 2023 capture of splitwise.com/pro, the Pro feature list reads: receipt scanning, itemization, default split settings, currency conversion, expense search, charts and graphs. Nothing about expense volume. By the 1 December 2023 capture, a new entry sits at the top of that list:
Unlimited expenses — Add as many expenses as you like each day, with no interruptions.

The r/ynab thread was already archived on 25 October 2023, so enforcement had begun before then. That puts the change between late June and late October 2023, with the marketing page catching up by December. One user in that thread put the gap plainly at the time: "I can't find anything about a limit on entries on their website. You'd think they'd have added 'unlimited entries' or something to their pro list of features at least." Splitwise did — about six weeks later.
Why every other page gives a different number
Search this question and you'll get a page of blog posts, nearly all published by rival bill-splitting apps. We read the ones ranking today. They don't agree with each other:
- Split Circle (1 April 2026): "approximately 3-5 expense entries per day" — while conceding "the exact number is not officially documented and appears to vary".
- Settlify (29 March 2026): "around 2 expenses per person".
- TripPlanHelper (1 July 2026): "roughly 3 expenses per day".
- Splitty (undated, headlined 2026): names no number at all.
- NomadCrew (2 July 2026): quotes a user review saying "3 expenses a day", but asserts nothing itself.
Four of the five cite no source whatsoever. The fifth, TripPlanHelper, does link sources for its figure — to Settlify, AreWeEven and Splitty. Those are three other bill-splitting apps' blogs, one of which says two per day and one of which gives no number at all. The trail loops between competitors and never arrives at Splitwise.
That's less a criticism of those writers than a description of the vacuum Splitwise left. When a vendor won't publish a number, everyone downstream ends up estimating from user complaints and citing each other.
What Splitwise Pro costs
Splitwise doesn't publish prices on its website either — splitwise.com/pro states none. The in-app-purchase rows on its US App Store listing do, read on 12 August 2026 against app version 26.7.2:
- $4.99/month is the current standard monthly price. Rows at $2.99 and $3.99 also appear and are legacy or regional SKUs.
- $39.99/year is the current standard annual price, with a $29.99 row alongside it.
For the limit specifically, Pro's promise is "Unlimited expenses". The support email above put the real Pro ceiling at "over one thousand per day" — high enough to be academic for anyone splitting dinners and trips, but not literally none.
What we can't tell you
We don't hold a Splitwise account and didn't test the limit, so this page reports what's documented rather than what happened to one of us on one afternoon. That leaves three things genuinely open:
- The current number. Splitwise has never published it, and the last figure it gave anyone was three per day, in 2023.
- When it resets. Splitwise says only "as soon as the daily limit resets", with no time and no timezone. Users in the 2023 thread reported waiting longer than a day.
- Whether your account matches anyone else's. Splitwise said it rolled the limits out gradually; in that same thread, users reported two per day, one or two per day, and in one case three per week.
If you want a definitive answer, the only source that has one is Splitwise support — and going by 2023, they'll answer by email rather than publish it.

How many expenses can you add per day on free Splitwise?
