The Best Splitwise Alternatives in 2026, Source-Checked

Search for a Splitwise alternative and you'll find two kinds of pages: apps ranking themselves first, and aggregator lists nobody has verified. This page is different in one honest way — Dolio is our app, and we say so — and one practical way: every claim about every app below is dated and linked to a primary source, resolved live from the same facts database that powers all our comparisons. Here are four Splitwise alternatives worth considering, including the cases where we'd point you at a competitor.

The short version

The best Splitwise alternative depends on why you're leaving. Dolio and Tricount both offer unlimited expense entry with no ads — Dolio funds its free plan with an optional Pro tier, while Tricount has no paid tier at all and even imports your Splitwise data. Settle Up trades ads for the most generous free feature set of the four. Spliit is the open-source pick: no accounts, no ads, no paid plan, self-hostable. Why people are looking for an alternative

Splitwise's own subscription page (checked 18 July 2026) describes the trade: the free tier shows ads and caps how many expenses you can add per day, and Splitwise Pro removes the ads and unlocks unlimited daily expenses, receipt scanning, currency conversion, charts, and search. The current standard Pro price on the US App Store is $4.99/month (checked 18 July 2026). You'll see "3 expenses per day" quoted around the web, but Splitwise doesn't publish the exact number, so we don't claim it.

There's a quieter limitation, too. Splitwise lets you add a "placeholder friend" — someone tracked by name without contact info — but its own knowledge base is explicit that "everyone in a Splitwise group can log in and see their balance": a placeholder can't see or manage anything until they get contact info attached and create an account (checked 26 July 2026). If your group includes someone who will never install the app, that matters.

The four alternatives

Dolio — free without ads, and nobody is forced to sign up

Full disclosure: Dolio is our app. Its free plan has no ads and no caps — unlimited groups, expenses, and members — and is funded by the optional Pro plan (€2.49/month, or a 7-day pass from €0.99). Equal, fixed-amount, weighted, and fully itemized splits are all free, and ghost participants are full members of every split without an account, an email, or a phone number — they can claim their identity later or never. Pro adds receipt scanning that reads the bill and turns it into an itemized, split expense. Dolio runs as a full web app with an iOS app released; the Android app is in closed beta, which is a real limitation today. Each group keeps one currency by design — no conversions, no rate disputes. Tricount — no paid tier, and it imports your Splitwise data

Tricount, owned by bunq, says it is trusted by 21 million people and is the default expense app for many European groups. It is completely free: its App Store listing reads "Free & unlimited – no subscription, no hidden fees, no limit on tricounts or expenses", and the former Premium tier was deprecated (official FAQ, checked 26 July 2026). It converts mixed currencies automatically, works offline, and — uniquely on this page — its features page lists a Splitwise importer (checked 26 July 2026). The trade-offs: no web app anymore — the official FAQ's platform list covers iOS and Android only (checked 23 July 2026) — no receipt scanning, and the bunq migration removed features long-time users relied on: the FAQ lists CSV/PDF export, sorting, personal mode, and custom splits as no longer available. Settle Up — the strongest free tier, paid for with ads

Settle Up gives away more than any other app here: even, unequal, and weighted splits, multiple payers on one expense, CSV export, live exchange-rate conversion, offline entry, and a real web app — free on web, iOS, and Android. The catch is the funding model: the free version shows ads, and "Remove all ads" is the first feature on its Premium page (checked 25 July 2026), alongside receipt photos, categories, recurring expenses, charts, and Excel export. Individual Premium starts at $3.49/month in the web app. Note that its receipt feature stores a photo of the bill — it doesn't read it. Founder David Vávra writes openly about the model; his December 2025 write-up reports one million monthly active users. Whether you prefer paying with attention (ads) or having power users pay with money is the real choice between Settle Up and Dolio.

Spliit — open source, no accounts, donation-funded

Spliit is the open-source alternative (MIT license): use the hosted app at spliit.app or run your own instance. Nobody needs an account — not even the person who creates the group — there are no ads and no paid tier; the project is funded by donations. It optimizes reimbursements, supports recurring expenses, and its AI receipt scan (beta) reads a title, category, amount, and date from a photo. An official iOS app shipped in 2025 (checked 26 July 2026); there is no official Android app, and each group is single-currency. Other apps that come up

Three more names appear in most alternative lists: Splid, SplitPro (another open-source, self-hostable Splitwise alternative), and Splitser (which says five million people use it). We haven't source-verified their claims yet, which is exactly why they're not in the table above — when we add an app to a comparison, every cell has to carry a primary source and a date. We'd rather show four apps we can vouch for than ten we can't.
