Dolio vs Tricount

Plan a trip with a European group and someone will suggest Tricount — it has been the continent's default way to split holiday costs for years, and it is completely free. Dolio is free too. That makes this a different kind of comparison: there is no paywall to escape, so the real question is what each app does with its free tier — and what Tricount quietly dropped when its new app arrived. Here's an honest, source-checked look at how the two stack up.

The short version

Tricount is the bigger name: simple, mobile-first, fully free and ad-free, with automatic currency conversion and an offline mode that make it a solid travel companion. Dolio matches the free-and-unlimited part, then adds what Tricount doesn't do: a web app you can use from any browser, splits that go beyond equal shares, a built-in CSV export, receipt scanning on Pro — and, most distinctively, friends can be part of a split without creating an account at all. The table above resolves against live, dated facts, so it stays current as either product changes.

What changed when bunq took over

bunq — the Dutch banking app that acquired Tricount in 2022 — later replaced the original app entirely. The good news is genuine: Tricount Premium was deprecated, and the app is now free, in its own words, "without any additional or hidden costs". The less-advertised news sits in Tricount's own FAQ (checked 23 July 2026), which lists several features as no longer available: sorting expenses, exporting a tricount to CSV and PDF, personal mode, and custom splits — with custom splits marked "planned for a future update". If you need your data out today, the FAQ's suggestion is to email support. The same help center also notes that newly registered Tricount users automatically get a bunq account on signup.

Where Dolio pulls ahead

• Works in the browser. Dolio runs on the web as well as iOS and Android, so you can add the hotel bill from a laptop. Tricount's FAQ lists the app as available on iOS and Android only.
• No signup for the people you split with. Add anyone as a ghost participant — they appear in every split with no account and can claim their identity later, or stay anonymous forever.
• Splits that go beyond equal shares. Equal, fixed amounts, weighted shares, or fully itemized bills — all free. Tricount's own FAQ lists custom splits as no longer available.
• Built-in CSV export. Download a spreadsheet-ready export of a group's full history in one click — no support email required.
• Receipt scanning on Pro. Snap a receipt and Dolio reads and splits it. Tricount lets you attach photos of receipts to an expense, but it doesn't read them.

Where Tricount still wins

This cuts both ways, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Tricount says it is trusted by 21 million people, so in Europe there is a fair chance your group already has it installed. Its multi-currency handling converts expenses into a single currency automatically — great for a trip that mixes euros, pounds, and francs. It works offline and syncs later. If your group is coming from Splitwise, its built-in importer makes the move easy. And there is no paid tier at all: everything Tricount does is free, whereas Dolio's receipt scanning and advanced analytics are part of Pro (€2.49/month, or a 7-day pass from €0.99).
